KCOBA USA, Inc. Year in Review

Robert Kelly

S

ince our 2007 AGM, a new Board was installed, which includes a 2007 graduate, Brandon Allwood, who has not served as that link to the school we thought he would and Alimi Bonjoko, whose intellect, generosity and calming influence has proved to be a significant addition.

The annual Summit was hosted at North Street, where we came face to face with the deficiencies of both campuses. Frequent interaction and joint ventures with our fellow fortis North American based associations became the norm.

Kitson Blissett, with an initial contribution of $5,000, launched a mid-term investment vehicle that with the good fortune and the support of other old boys, could meet some of the recurring expense that the school faces and depending on continued growth could be part of our contribution to the construction of the Douglas Forrest Building, second floor and the future Sports Complex.  Incidentally, it has gained over 130% in less than one year.

Michael Walters is Compiling a List of 1968 Sixth Formers

T

hanks for all the input in updating the 1968 sixth form list.  We are almost halfway there in terms of contacting individuals, and I trust you will all continue to provide new info/leads to get the list to as close as to 100% as possible.

First, how did this begin, and secondly a request.

I was attending the funeral of Denis Johnson’s (football captain) wife Barbara here in Tampa about a year ago, when someone tapped me on the shoulder.  I turned around and standing in front of me was none other than former classmate Patrick (Bull) Hector.   We talked and I found out that he lived in Atlanta and was a part of the KCOBA Atlanta Chapter along with Glen Laman.  Subsequently, I found out that Douglas Carnegie also lived in Atlanta, and before long I found myself on my way to Atlanta to attend the KCOBA annual banquet and book signing for the latest “History of KC”.  Then I had to ask myself the question:  Where is everybody after KC?  more>>

Is there a Spelling Bee Champion in KC's Future?

by Twan Beckford

Brother of National Champ enrolls at KC

One of the major highlights to look forward to in  the 2008/2009 school year is the possibility of Kingston College having an entrant in the Parish and eventually the National Spelling Bee Competition.

After the results of the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) were released, it was noted that the 2007/2008 St. Catherine Parish champion and eventual third place finisher at the National Spelling Bee Championship; Jordi Nickoli Dunbar was placed at Kingston College as a seventh grade student. The Melbourne Park Social Services Building

After many ups and downs the building is near completion

Audley Hewett makes a presentation to Principal Hemmings as several contributors to the building fund look on.

The Melbourne Social Services Building is almost completed and there is much celebration and sighing of relief throughout the old boy and school communities.

When I spoke to Audley Hewett of the Florida Chapter recently after one of his many visits to Jamaica to coordinate the project, he was confident that the end was in sight. "If we don't finish it won't be because of money," he explained. He had assembed a group of contributors in Jamaica to make the final push to complete the building.

A Few Words from the Editor

Glen Laman
Glen Laman

O ur readers are on the move. Recently, I heard from our reader in Zimbabwe--she had moved to neighboring Botswana because of all the political unrest.

Our reader in Kenya has also made a move-- to Tanzania-- a neighboring country to the south. And Atlanta member, John Walker, moved back to Jamaica last month. We will miss John but we wish him all the best in Mandeville.

I did a liitle moving around myself this summer when my wife and I went on a cruise that stopped in seven islands in the Southern Caribbean. On each island we went on a tour to see the sights. They are all so beautiful, peaceful and laid back. It was a very relaxing and meaningful week; I had dreamed of such a cruise since I was a kid and overheard someone talking about visiting the islands on a boat.

On one tour, our driver was introduced as being a Jamaican but when I introduced myself to him he admitted he was not really Jamaican but identified closely with us. It was not the first time I had run into people who wanted to be Jamaican.

Well, I have to get back to watching the Olympics now. Plus, I have some other dreams to fulfill. No doubt many more folks will want to be Jamaican after the track and field events.

Happy reading!

Former Manning Cup Captain Heads to College in Ohio

Christopher Allen attended Kingston College from 2000-2008. Not only was he was captain of the 2007/08 Manning cup team.

He earned four Unit 1 Cape passes (Math, Accounts, Sociology & Caribbean Studies) and also passed nine (9) subjects in the CXC exams including English and mathematics.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mt. Vernon, Ohio has offered Christopher a partial scholarship that covers his tuition and books valued at US$18,000.  He still needs an additional US$6,000 for room and board.  His family can only provide $2,000 towards his room and board so there is a shortfall of $4,000.

Christopher has approached the KCOBA for help in covering his room and board.  If you would like to help you can contact Robert Kelly at robertkckelly@aol.com.

You can see Christopher in action in this Youtube video:

KC Old Boys in Cuba

P

aul Sowman, Warren McCalla, Kemar Samuels and Jevayne Mills are KC Old Boys studying medicine in Cuba. They are all going into the second year of the medical program. It's their third year in Cuba.

According to Warren McCalla who provided much of the information for this article, they first set foot in Cuba at the Jose Marti airport in November of 2006. After an intensive 12 week course in Spanish, the old boys were placed in regular classes with Spanish speaking students from Central and South America. They spent their first year at the prestigious Latin American School of Medicine in Havana. "It's a very beautiful campus with a high quality teaching staff," explained Warren.

The program of The Latin American School of Medical Sciences is based on intensive advising and tutoring designed to help every student succeed. Students must pass competency exams at appropriate points in their course of study.
